Ernest White II - Fly Brother

I first met Ernest White II in Havana, Cuba, either in the final days of 2002 or the first days of 2003. I was an English teacher in Caracas, Venezuela at the time, and took a two-week trip to Cuba over the Christmas and New Year holiday break with a fellow American teacher. This was well before eased travel restrictions made it relatively easy for Americans to visit the island. So rare was it to see young black female travelers, other tourists complimented us on our English, having assumed we were Cubanas...But I digress.

Anyone who meets Ernest is struck by his warmth, intelligence, and killer smile. He is able to connect with folks from all walks of life. He is a proud FAMU grad and his samba moves will put most anyone to shame. We took a samba class in DC many years ago and I saw even more improved dance moves several years later in South America. Fast forward through the years and we’ve met up several places around the world, with a few days in Recife, Brazil being a favorite memory.

The amazing thing about seeing Ernest’s growing travel empire of radio, television, and a digital magazine, is that I remember when it was his dream to encourage black folks to travel. To reassure us that we didn’t have to be rich to be able to do so. That we could have life altering experiences by stepping further out into the world. I am so proud that he had the discipline, perseverance, and sheer will to make his vision a reality. Ernest’s show, Fly Brother with Ernest White II has aired episodes from Toronto to Tajikistan, and everywhere in between, including my all-time favorite city, Cape Town, South Africa on public television in the US. Episodes of the show are accessible on his website (please see the link below). You can also check him out on any of the following platforms:
