Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago should be higher on many travelers’ lists. Trinidad, with its significant oil and gas industry, relies on tourism to a much lesser degree than some of its Caribbean neighbors. Also its beaches, ie the beautiful Maracas Bay, tend to be a deep indigo rather than the typical turquoise waters. The country is located pretty far to the east—we arrived after a 35-minute flight from Caracas, Venezuela. In fact, the Andes Mountains extend into Trinidad, suggesting it was once part of South America.

Still, a trip to this vibrant country is well worth it. Trinidad is the home of Soca, a music genre consisting of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Indian music, and Calypso so if you want to move your waist and wine and “Do it Like a Boss,” then Trinidad is the place to be. Its world famous Carnival is not to be missed. Also, the mix of African and East Indian influences make for delicious cuisine, an interesting cultural mix, and plural democracy (aka with more than one center of political power).

Some locals were surprised to see two young black female American visitors with no genealogical ties to the island. But that did not dim their friendliness towards us. Tobago has the more stereotypical Caribbean postcard beaches, and has a more laid back vibe. I would recommend relaxing there after living it up on the bigger island. We headed that way after a few days in Port of Spain.
